Teacher Training Open House

This class is taught by:

Mike Averill

Mike was born and raised in Colorado. Having been a gymnast for much of his young life, investigating the mind-body connection has long been a passion. Yoga cemented a place in Mike's life initially as a way to manage stress, but grew into a much deeper exploration of the human experience. Mike hopes to inspire this same curiosity for life in others.

Mike completed his 200 hour Yoga Alliance certification under the guidance of Francesca Asumah, is in the process of receiving his 500 hour certification, and has also trained with Julia Planine-Troiani, Deanna Ainsworth, Rebekah Rivera, Brit Middleton, Cornelius Jones Jr., and Jonatan Silva, among others.

Tim Oakes

A San Diego native, I moved up to Los Angeles in pursuit of a college education. I studied at UCLA and completed my B.S. in Psychobiology in 2013. During my time at UCLA, I managed the Women’s NCAA Swim & Dive program. I think the combination of my psychology background and involvement in college-level athletics sparked my interest in the physical body as well as the mind. One of the most interesting classes I took at UCLA was Stress & Bodily Disease. In it we discussed the correlations between different stimuli (positive or negative) we subject our minds and bodies to and how it ultimately affects our quality of life. I’ve always been invested in personal growth and have a deep-seated hunger to learn. I think underlying all of this is an innate personal desire to understand all the inner-workings of life itself.

I found Hot 8 Yoga through a friend, and began my intro offer back in April of 2014. I quickly became hooked by the intense physical, mental, and spiritual workout I was engaging in. Yoga at Hot 8 Yoga was the first workout I became fully immersed in. I love that one’s yoga practice can be anything he/she needs it to be. Some days I come to my mat needing an intense physical workout – other days I need to engage my mind. Luckily there is everything from Yoga Barre to Hot Yoga, from Yin to Sculpt. I love the fact that I can pick and choose which classes I want to take based on the mood I’m in that day. No class-discrimination here!

I have fallen in love with Hot 8 Yoga and I want to share this passion with the rest of the yogi community! Questions/comments? I’m your guy! Feel free to reach out at tim@hot8yoga.com.

Sarah Helt

Sarah Helt, E-RYT200
Certified Yoga Instructor + Accessible Yoga Ambassador

My yoga journey began at 18 when a friend suggested I try a class at the local gym. It happened to be an Ashtanga primary series and from that day forward I was hooked! However, it wasn’t until my last year of college, when my clowning and movement studies professor asked if I would assist his summer yoga intensive, that I started to consider teaching.

My initial 200 hour yoga training was in Canggu, Bali, Indonesia in multi-style vinyasa, viniyoga, and incorporated thai massage. I began my yoga career in Chicago, Illinois where, in my first two years, I was lucky enough to help open five different boutique yoga spaces. Primarily a power vinyasa and restorative-yin yoga teacher, my life changed completely when I was contacted by a high profile triathlon coach to work with her disabled athletes. I was introduced to the true therapeutic benefits of yoga for recovery, pain management, and trauma. I work with students who have, and have had, cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injuries, amputations, visual impairments, spinal chord injury, chronic pain, and/or nerve damage. Last year I partnered with the Accessible Yoga Movement in Santa Barbara to become one of the organization’s first Accessible Yoga Ambassadors.

I approach life with an open heart and zero expectations; as I believe you should approach every yoga class. I am overjoyed to share my practice with you. Come play!

Eddy Rimada

My approach to yoga is understanding that only with a strong committed daily practice, overcoming and pushing through the urge to let the pose overcome you, can one only then begin to shed the layers of the ego that have been holding us back from becoming our truest self leading every decision with an unconditionally loving open heart.

Camille Kappelman

Camille found yoga through her passion for dance. Growing up immersed in ballet and modern, she attained her BFA in ballet from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts where she also discovered a strong practice in both Pilates and Yoga. After two decades of dance training she moved on to dance professionally with companies in Santa Barbara and Santa Monica. Camille moved to Pasadena in 2016 where she found Hot 8 Yoga and established a strong and steady practice. Immersing herself fully into the yoga world changed her outlook on life and brought about heightened passion for teaching. Obtaining her 200hr YTT under the direction of Sarah Helt and Scott Brandon she delved more fully into the world of yoga with an open heart and mind. Fusing her love of dance and yoga together, she strives to create a safe and welcoming space allowing students to challenge themselves both physically and mentally. As a teacher and mentor of dance for over eight years, this new found love and deep exploration of yoga informs and heightens her instruction in both arenas, allowing students to hone their practice and find greater meaning and a greater sense of satisfaction through this demanding and beautiful work.

Alex Halenda

Alex loves this yoga stuff. She really believes in its power to change the world too. It's not only her studies with teachers across the country, its the inner-work and self study that she finds truly magical and transformative. That empowering self-analysis and the awareness that comes with it is ultimately what she seeks to share with you! With over 10 years practicing, 8 years teaching she's in the game for the long-haul, and she wants to share every bit of power, vinyasa, yin, pranayama, and meditation she can with you. Hopefully with a few good laughs and stories along the way. Alex keeps it light, but she takes you deep, as deep as you're ready to go!
