In the beginning of 2013, I realized I was at my heaviest at over 350 pounds and wanted to make a change. At first, I started by changing my eating habits, but saw minor results. In the late Summer of 2013, a co-worker of mine, Jen Callahan, told me about Hot 8 and how she was able to see some amazing results in terms of strength and stamina. I was skeptical that it would work anywhere near as well for me but thought I’d give it a shot.
I went to the first workout and it wiped me out like no other workout I had ever been through. I signed up for the 30 day trial and continued to get my butt kicked going a couple times a week. About a year later, I usually go to Hot 8 six days a week on average. I have lost well over 100 pounds and feel like I am in the best shape I’ve been in well over 10 years. Changing my habits helped but the workouts at Hot 8 really allowed me to see results.
Everyone at Hot 8 has been incredibly supportive and encouraging. I was embarrassed to show up in the shape I was in initially but I was always treated very well. I am incredibly grateful to Omar Lopez, Cornelius Jones Jr., and Marja Lankinen whose classes I regularly attend and whose encouragement has been extremely helpful as well as Jen for allowing me to find a workout routine which I feel has truly changed my life.
After what seems like a lifetime of on-and-off practice, I made a commitment to go deeper and signed up for my first 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Training. I chose Hot/Power Fusion with Deanna Ainsworth in the Spring of 2103, as I had been taking the class regularly and really loved the set sequence.
I believe there is power in a set-sequence class. It allows the mind to move away from "what's coming next" to a true focus on listening to the teacher and proper alignment. It also challenges us to examine what is going on in our daily lives and to pay attention to any actions that may be causing a difference within our set practice. For instance, for three weeks a student may be balancing like a pro but then, one day, they can't stick Standing Bow to save their lives. I love when this happens to me as it serves as a reminder that just when we think that we have it all together or that we are the "best" at something, an unexpected potential challenge will present itself.
The lesson for me in these types of situations is that we can always get better, that we can always cultivate awareness through a strong set-sequence that allows us to measure the subtle energy shifts and changes that occur in our daily lives. Challenges will always present themselves and they should. They make us stronger, smarter and more compassionate. The good news is that as long as we continue to show up on the mat, we'll be able to observe them, contemplate them and understand them as they show up in our practice, before sending them away. A strong set-sequence practice serves as a barometer to these challenges while allowing us to deepen our practice in so many ways. It's something I share when teaching Hot Power Fusion at Hot 8 Yoga.

This study examined the impact of heat acclimation on improving exercise performance in cool and hot environments. Twelve trained cyclists performed tests of maximal aerobic power (V̇O2max), time-trial performance, and lactate threshold, in both cool [13°C, 30% relative humidity (RH)] and hot (38°C, 30% RH) environments before and after a 10-day heat acclimation (∼50% V̇O2max in 40°C) program.
