Every posture in yoga begins with its foundation – the part of your body touching the ground, bearing the weight of everything on top of it. Your yoga practice works the same way. As you get stronger on your mat, more comfortable with the postures, more confident in your body and your movements, there comes a point where to keep making progress, you have to go back to basics. It’s a cliché, but even Picasso had to learn to draw still-lifes before he moved on to the abstract work he’s famous for. The Hot 8 Foundations workshops are based on this principle of grounding to grow. The workshops are not heated, and while we do incorporate breathwork and some posture work, it’s a more informal setting than the typical class. It’s a great opportunity to get to know your teachers, ask questions, and share your experiences with your fellow students.
It’s important to remember that yoga is both an ancient practice and a modern phenomenon. As much as it is rooted in ancient Indian culture and philosophy, it is also constantly evolving to fill a much-needed space in our modern, individualistic, fast-paced society. As students at Hot 8 Yoga, we are at the forefront of an exciting movement – one that owes much to the past, but which is being shaped right now by us, by our actions, our knowledge, our intentions. After all, this community is only as strong as its foundation – you.
